The layoff rumor mill is a powerful force — sometimes stronger than an entire team or even the Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) that work hard to sustain a positive company culture. At certain times of the year, often tied to end-of-quarter results or annual performance reviews, the rumors can abound. I’ve experienced this cycle many times, and each time, that familiar wave of nervousness and uncertainty would creep in. My thoughts went to my mortgage, daycare payments and all my other adult responsibilities.
Drawing inspiration from the article, “4 strategies for leadership during a layoff,” this column offers insights for employees to stay proactive and resilient if rumors of layoffs begin to swirl. In fact, while writing this article, the rumor mill was on fire at the company where I work — and I received my own layoff notice just as I was finishing it. Thankfully, I was able to find another job, but these strategies helped me navigate those uncertain weeks and prepare for whatever came next.
Keeping the focus on work that matters
When layoffs are rumored, it’s easy to get distracted or let stress affect your performance. I found that the best approach was to stay engaged in my work — particularly on projects that I truly enjoyed. Keeping my resume updated was a small action that made me feel more prepared if the rumors proved true.
I also chose to focus on tasks that I found personally rewarding. For me, this included organizing ERG events and offering help to other teams. These activities kept me connected to my colleagues and helped me find satisfaction at work, even amid the uncertainty.
Building my network and documenting achievements
I’m naturally interested in strategy, delivery and tracking. So, when the rumor mill was at its peak, I leaned into my “project manager” mindset. I started documenting my achievements in an Excel file, tracking all the projects I had managed and recording positive feedback from clients or colleagues. This might sound a bit formal, but seeing my accomplishments on paper helped me feel confident in my skills and prepared if I needed to make a case for myself to future employers.
At the same time, I became intentional about maintaining my professional relationships within the company. I started scheduling lunches with a different colleague every day to strengthen connections, but I also set boundaries. When someone brought up rumors or shared negative stories, I’d politely say, “Let’s enjoy our lunch talking about something non-work-related.” By setting these limits, I could enjoy my break, avoid stress and learn to feel more confident in setting boundaries when I needed them.
Leaning on my support network and focusing on development
One of the best things I did was rely on my support network outside of work. I had one or two trusted people with whom I could share my internal struggles, like wondering if I should start applying elsewhere or wait to see how things played out. Talking with them about these worries was a big relief and helped me weigh my options without feeling overwhelmed.
I also found it helpful to focus on my professional development. During breaks, I started creating content, participating in podcasts and diving into side projects that I enjoyed. These activities kept me feeling productive and gave me something constructive to look forward to, even when the work environment was tense. My goal was to stay engaged as an exceptional employee while also building skills and experiences I could take with me anywhere.
Staying resilient and proactive in uncertain times
Staying positive and focused when the rumor mill is in full swing isn’t easy, but these strategies helped me approach uncertainty with more confidence and control. By staying focused on meaningful work, documenting achievements, setting boundaries and leaning on my support network, I felt prepared to navigate whatever came next.
If you find yourself in a similar position, remember that while we can’t control the rumors or outcomes, we can control how we respond. Take small actions today to feel more prepared and resilient so that, whatever happens, you’ll be ready to handle it with confidence and focus.
