Salt Lake City — Big-D Construction joined representatives from The Other Side Academy and community partners to break ground on The Other Side Pavilion, which will be the main gathering space for The Other Side Village, a sister organization to The Other Side Academy, which supports adults coming off the streets, out of encampments and shelters, and other transitional housing who have been experiencing chronic homelessness.
The Other Side Pavilion, which is being constructed by Big-D, is slated to be completed in December 2024. The Pavilion will be a 2,200 square-foot building that will serve as a central space for residents of the Village and will include meeting space, laundry facilities, restrooms, and a kitchen.
As part of its commitment to giving back to the local community, Big-D waived various fees on the project. Other trade partners who have pledged to donate time, materials, and/or fees include Artistic Mill, Daw Construction and Golder Inc.
“Big-D Construction wants to thank The Other Side Village for their continued commitment to our community,” said Braden Moore, Vice President of Business Development for Big-D Construction. “We are passionate about culture, family and kindness to all people. Big-D fully supports The Other Side Village’s mission of creating community, family and supportive services to help each individual’s needs. Creating a sense of family and kindness speaks to the heart of our culture. We are very grateful to be part of this project.”
“This groundbreaking marks a critical milestone for development of The Other Side Village,” said Tim Stay, CEO, The Other Side Academy. “Until now, all the progress for the Village has been below ground with all the utility and site work. Today, we begin work above ground, constructing our very first building to be constructed on site. This is the first of 84 total buildings that will be built in this phase."
The Village consists of two parts: The Other Side Prep School, a 6-12 month free transitional residential program helping residents stabilize and develop skills to stay sober, form family-like connections and become accountable for the healthy behavior needed to thrive, and The Other Side Village, a permanent housing community. Upon completion, Phase 1 of The Village will include 60 cottages, a clubhouse, a wellness clinic with mental, medical, and dental healthcare services, and social enterprises offering paid employment onsite. The goal is to create a sober, self-sufficient community.
