A high school welding certification ignited Taija R. Jackson’s love for hands-on learning and technical vocations. As she embraced motherhood and sought a career that would offer both fulfillment and flexibility, Taija honed her skills in negotiation, sales and business management in the world of real estate. She completed an undergraduate degree, and when the opportunity arose to join Uintah Basin Technical College as the director of business and trades, it felt like a homecoming — a chance to blend her backgrounds into a role that resonated with her core values. Taija then decided to embark on a PhD program in career and technical education at Utah State University, where her research reflects her belief in the power of education to change lives and her dedication to extending that opportunity to underserved communities. Today, in her role as VP of student affairs, Taija is driven by the same passion for technical education that sparked her journey years ago.

What advice would you give to young women looking to succeed in your field?

First, no one succeeds in a vacuum. My path was illuminated by mentors who saw potential in me, often before I saw it in myself. Seek out mentors who inspire you and be open to the wisdom they offer. Second, every experience — whether a triumph or a setback — is ripe with lessons. The versatility of my career has taught me to be a perpetual student. Embrace every opportunity to learn, not just in formal settings but in everyday challenges and interactions. Third, you are the only one who can truly measure the extent of your capabilities. Throughout my career, I’ve encountered moments that tested my resolve, yet these were the moments that also expanded my sense of what was possible. Set your own benchmarks for success and push beyond them. Fourth, authenticity is your compass. Stay true to what drives you, even when it leads you down unconventional paths. Authenticity inspires others to pursue their own truths. Lastly — and this is a big one — success is not just about the heights you reach but about the hands you extend to lift others. Always make a point to reach back and offer support, guidance and opportunities to those coming up behind you. There’s profound joy and purpose in helping others ascend.

What community projects or charity work are you involved in, and why are they important to you?

Service holds a central place in my life. I actively participate in initiatives that focus on education and empowerment, such as mentoring programs for young women in technical fields and volunteering at local schools to enhance STEM education. I believe in giving back to the community that has supported my growth and see it as a way to extend opportunities to others and foster environments where everyone can thrive. This commitment to service is driven by a conviction that we all have a part to play in uplifting our communities, addressing disparities and inspiring the next generation to reach their full potential. For me, being involved in such efforts is about planting seeds for a future where equity, education and empowerment are accessible to all. To Main Page
