South Jordan, UT—After two years in operation and more than a year of extensive testing, South Jordan’s water purification demonstration facility, Pure SoJo, is open to the public for tours and taste testing.

“This project, to recycle and purify reclaimed water to drinking water standards, has been many years in the making,” said South Jordan Mayor Dawn Ramsey. “When your goal is to have a sustainable water supply for the future as you grow, you have to get innovative, work with all partners at your disposal, and find solutions.”

Those solutions include a type of water purification that a few cities nationwide are planning to use to supplement their water portfolios

“Since this project is the first of its kind in the State of Utah, we wanted to make sure the process we’re using was proven elsewhere in the country,” said Jason Rasmussen, the Assistant City Manager, who has been working on this concept for more than a decade.

The water recycling process used for the Pure SoJo project, known as a carbon-based ozone bio-filtration process, has been demonstrated in other cities, including in Florida and Colorado. There are other water recycling processes in use as well.

“We’ve proven that this process is safe, reliable and sustainable and the State of Utah agrees,” Mayor Ramsey said.

Now that the City has received its permit from the State Division of Drinking Water to allow for taste testing, South Jordan will offer tours to the public, including schools, residents, and others.

“We want everyone to know how this works, why it works, and why it’s a good option for South Jordan to consider for the future,” Mayor Ramsey said.

South Jordan is the first city in the state to be issued a drinking water permit for water recycling after extensive scientific testing and working with partners at the State of Utah Division of Water Quality, the Division of Drinking Water, the University of Utah, Carollo Engineers and others.
