SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake County officials, the Utah Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS), mental health advocates, and community partners gathered today to celebrate the grand opening of Clinical Consultants Featherstone Boarding Home, a new 30-unit residence dedicated to individuals with severe mental illness. This vital facility provides intensive, on-site support and is a key component of Salt Lake County’s Five-Year Human Services, Homelessness, and Criminal Justice Action Plan. Featherstone has been a partnership between the state of Utah, DHHS, and the County.
“Featherstone is a groundbreaking step forward in our mission to provide compassionate, effective care for individuals with severe mental illness,” said Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson. “This home offers more than just a roof over their heads—it delivers stability, dignity, and the support necessary for residents to lead healthier lives. We are deeply grateful to our partners at the state and local levels for making this project a reality.”
“Featherstone provides an opportunity to help the most vulnerable individuals in our community. We are honored to be a part of a project that will provide a caring, safe, and supportive environment where individuals can thrive,” said Santiago Cortez, CEO, Clinical Consultants.
Featherstone residents are referred through an Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) team, a nationally recognized, evidence-based mental health program. With five ACT teams now serving over 400 individuals, Salt Lake County is expanding access to critical, person-centered care that reduces hospitalizations, jail stays, and homelessness.
The State of Utah provided half of the funding for the Featherstone Boarding Home as part of its support for the Healing Opportunities to Mentally Excel Court Pilot Program, a new initiative aimed at creating a less restrictive, community-based alternative for individuals with mental illness who do not meet the standard for civil commitment or other criminal diversion courts. Featherstone will serve as a possible housing location for participants in the Healing Opportunities to Mentally Excel Court Pilot Program.
Salt Lake County estimates that at least 300 people experiencing homelessness in the county need intensive mental health care and housing. Featherstone Boarding Home ensures that dozens of those individuals receive the stability and services they need—bringing the county one step closer to addressing this urgent need.
