SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Inland Port Authority (UIPA) is supporting the expansion of Stadler Rail’s U.S. headquarters in Salt Lake City’s Northwest Quadrant with a strategic incentive aimed at strengthening Utah’s manufacturing sector and advancing green technology passenger rail solutions.
The expansion represents more than a $70 million investment and will double the size of Stadler’s existing facility, adding 245,000 square feet to accommodate two new assembly halls, a welding facility, sandblasting booth, and an innovative train battery charging station. This investment will also boost Stadler’s workforce, with plans to increase the number of employees from 500 to up to 800 over the next three years.
UIPA awarded Stadler US Inc an annual Property Tax Differential Rebate equivalent to 10% of the assessed property tax, post completion of the development.
This rebate will be provided yearly for no more than 25 years, provided continued operation within the Northwest Quadrant during that time. The award is contingent upon continued operations, corporate stewardship commitments, and water usage reviews. This incentive will enable Stadler to localize more of its supply chain, enhance job training programs, and further establish Utah as a leader in innovative transportation manufacturing.
“This investment solidifies Utah as a premier hub for cutting-edge passenger rail manufacturing,” said Ben Hart, executive director of UIPA. “Stadler’s expansion will bring high-quality jobs, strengthen local supply chains, and drive innovation in zero emission passenger rail technology—exactly the kind of growth we aim to support.”
Stadler’s Salt Lake City facility plays a crucial role in delivering modern passenger rail solutions across the United States, with current projects for UTA TRAX, Caltrain, TexRail, METRA, Caltrans, and MARTA extending through 2031. The new expansion will help the company develop and deploy next-generation zero emission propulsion systems, including battery and hydrogen-powered trains.
“We are proud to expand our U.S. manufacturing footprint right here in Salt Lake City,” said Martin Ritter, CEO of Stadler North America Division. “This incentive will allow us to accelerate innovation, enhance our workforce, and strengthen our partnerships with the Inland Port and transit agencies nationwide.”
Beyond job creation, Stadler is committed to investing in the Utah community, with plans to support workforce development through its apprenticeship program and explore future projects to benefit employees at the facility.
Stadler currently trains 26 youth apprentices at their facility through the TRAC program. Four of these apprentices are expected to graduate from the three-year program this summer.
With this expansion, Stadler continues to set new standards for sustainable transportation solutions while reinforcing Utah’s position as a key player in the future of zero emission passenger rail manufacturing.
