After an extensive national search, Southern Utah University is proud to name Lucia Maloy as the institution’s new General Counsel. Maloy has served in a legal counsel capacity for SUU since 2020, most recently serving as Associate General Counsel for the Office of Legal Affairs. Maloy will begin her appointment immediately.

“For the past five years, Lucia has proven herself as a dedicated advocate and advisor for the University,” said Mindy Benson, SUU President. “Since joining our team, she has collaborated with campus leaders on a broad array of matters from traditional higher education issues to unprecedented times that included a worldwide pandemic. She is an asset to our institution, and we are fortunate to have her at SUU.”

As General Counsel, Maloy will serve as SUU’s chief legal officer and oversee the University’s Office of Legal Affairs. As a member of the President’s Council, she will provide counsel and advice to the Board of Trustees, administrators, and other campus groups on critical strategic, legal, and policy issues including personnel and employment issues, ethics, contracts, risk management, compliance and Title IX, among many others.

“It’s evident to those who have had the pleasure to work closely with Lucia that she takes a lot of pride in her role of being able to provide legal advice and guidance to campus leaders across departments,” said Jake Johnson, SUU Assistant Provost and Chair of SUU’s General Counsel search committee. “We are so pleased to have Lucia continue to support SUU in her new role.”

Prior to joining SUU, Maloy practiced as a civil litigator for the Utah Attorney General’s Office. She represented state agencies and state officials, including higher education institutions, on matters of civil rights, employment law, civil litigation, etc. Her role also included providing training to state entities and state actors regarding matters of free speech, anti-discrimination, and investigations.

Maloy graduated cum laude from J. Reuben Clark Law School in April 2015. Prior to law school, she worked as an athletic trainer and taught sports medicine courses in NCAA Division I and II programs. Maloy has a Master of Science degree in Exercise Science from Brigham Young University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

“Being a part of the SUU community has been a wonderful journey thus far,” said Maloy. “I am honored to continue on in my career here.”
