When Daniel Gomez’s wife was diagnosed with breast cancer 21 years ago, he couldn’t have known how the experience would shape his future as a healthcare leader. Following her successful treatment, a seemingly chance invitation to join the Select Health Board of Trustees in 2007 launched a remarkable journey of board service that continues to this day.
“I thought that initial outreach to me was somewhat serendipitous — kind of a right place, right time, with the right person thing,” Daniel reflects. “I’ve since come to know that it wasn’t. It was purposeful. I was definitely in the right place at the right time with the right person, but it was also the right thing for me to do.”
Recalling his very first board meeting, Daniel says he walked into the room and found himself seated among members of the community that he admired tremendously. He looked around the room and thought, “What am I doing here? How did I get here?”
“I turned that question around to myself as I was sitting there in that board room with all of those amazing business leaders and community leaders,” he continues. “I thought, ‘Well, you don’t necessarily belong in this room with these people, but you were put here for a reason. Do the best you can.‘”
From there, as Daniel recalls, “the adventure started.” Currently serving on several boards, Daniel has now devoted nearly two decades to healthcare governance. Notably, his commitment also extends beyond healthcare to include service on the board of the Women’s Leadership Institute.
Throughout his board tenure, Daniel has been instrumental in advancing Intermountain’s mission of helping people live the healthiest lives possible. “One of the things that I’m most proud of … is making the highest quality healthcare available to more people,” he says. “We’re not there yet — it’s a never-ending journey — but I’m really proud of where we’ve gotten to at this point.”
Looking ahead, Daniel remains passionate about healthcare accessibility and would like to see more quality, affordable healthcare available to economically underserved and diverse populations.
