Are you where you thought you would be when you were 18?
To be honest, yes and no. I have worked incredibly hard since I was young to meet major milestones in my life. I left my home when I was 13 to start high school with a full-ride scholarship at a private boarding school in Mount Pleasant, Utah, with the hopes of going to college with a scholarship as well. I was able to do that and finish a master’s program after. Through more hard work, I was able to get here. However, supply chain and operations was not the industry I thought I’d end up in. My career started off in marketing and communications. It’s quite interesting how knowledge in these areas translates across the board.
What challenges have you overcome to get here today?
Lots. Bias toward ethnic, working women is a real thing. Bias toward working moms is an even bigger thing. These impact the way you look at yourself and can often cause imposter syndrome. When I’d get stuck in my head, I would try hard to get to a place of inspiration, often thinking of my mom and how she did it when my sisters and I were younger with very few resources available. Then, I remind myself that I am doing alright.
