The Center of Economic Opportunity and Belonging (the CEOB), Economic Development Corporation of Utah (EDCUtah), and Comcast NBCUniversal are launching a groundbreaking video, “We Are Utah: Building Belonging Through Storytelling." The video showcases the power of storytelling in fostering a culture of belonging in the workplace and provides a valuable resource for Utah employers who want to start conversations about belonging in their own organizations.
“The workplace is where many of us meet people of other genders, religions, abilities, ethnicities, and cultural backgrounds,” said Ze Min Xiao, director of the CEOB. “Belonging is an essential part of a vibrant and cohesive community, and Utah employers can have an immense impact by building cultures of belonging within their organizations.”
The “We Are Utah: Building Belonging Through Storytelling" video was developed as a companion resource to the “We Are Utah: A Toolkit for Building Belonging in the Workplace." The toolkit is a new educational asset that is designed to help every Utah business. This is an opportunity to learn about the best practices for building a culture of belonging that can improve your employees’ experiences, increase harmony, and boost productivity.
As J.D. Keller, region senior vice president of Comcast Mountain West Region, said, “Comcast is proud to support the inspiring efforts of EDCUtah and the Center for Economic Opportunity and Belonging to help Utah employers build cultures of belonging in the workplace. We champion initiatives that improve employee experiences, increase harmony and boost productivity."
The importance of a diversified workforce cannot be overstated. However, building a culture of belonging is just as important as hiring team members of diverse backgrounds.
According to the McKinsey Great Attrition Survey, 51% of employees who resigned cited a lack of belonging at work as a reason for leaving. In a Harvard Business Review study, it was found that organizations that foster cultures of high belonging report a 56% increase in job performance, a 50% decrease in turnover risk, and a 75% reduction in sick days.
“EDCUtah heard from employers throughout Utah that fostering belonging for employees and their families is an increasingly important priority," said Scott Cuthbertson, president and CEO of EDCUtah. “This project is the result of real collaboration among Utah employers and community-led organizations to ensure that Utah can be a place where everyone feels they belong."
The digital toolkit offers a collection of proven practices for building cultures of belonging in the workplace. The activities in the toolkit were curated from national sources, Utah focus groups, and Utah employers, and they were vetted by leaders from Utah’s multicultural communities.
Sponsored by Comcast NBCUniversal, Dominion Energy, Fidelity Investments, Lumen, Meta, and Rocky Mountain Power, the video and toolkit provides current resources that can lead to better employee retention, higher job performance, and increased productivity. Both are available at www.edcutah.org/diversity. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from the best and help your organization thrive.
