The Mad Men era may be decades behind us, but not much has changed in the advertising industry as far as gender balance is concerned. The industry is still highly male-dominated, particularly in creative departments and in senior leadership.
The 3% Conference, a gathering held annually in San Francisco, aims to change these troubling statistics. It derives its name from the fact that only 3% of creative directors are female. The disparity between the number of male and female creatives translates to lost opportunities for advertisers to make the best possible connection with their audiences. 85% of consumer purchases are made by women, while only a fraction of advertising is created with female input or perspective. Essentially, our industry is falling short of its potential.
To shed light on the situation and catalyze change—especially in a state that stands in particular need of better gender equality and pay in the workplace—MRM//McCann is partnering with AAF-UT to bring Kat Gordon, founder of the 3% Conference, to Salt Lake City this July 31st. Kat will deliver a presentation on the business value that diversity delivers to agencies, advertisers, and their clients.
Following Kat’s presentation, there will be a lively discussion featuring senior ad executives and creative directors, including:
Lori Feld, President, MRM//McCann West
Sallie Mars, Chief Diversity Officer, McCann Worldgroup
Alexandra Fuller, Creative Director, Struck
Adam Morgan, Executive Creative Director, ThomasArts
Jeff Sheets, Founder, BYU AdLab
The evening will also include a cocktail mingle with drinks and light appetizers served. Tickets are currently on sale for $35 and are expected to sell out; students receive a 50% discount. All local agencies, agency clients, in-house creative departments, schools, and business organizations are invited to attend. Sponsorship opportunities are also available for those interested in supporting this critical movement.
Tickets can be purchased at 3percentslc.eventbrite.com
