Shane Robison: A Visionary with His Head in the Cloud

By Alex Jenkins

October 8, 2013

Countless devices are connected to the internet and often have their applications hosted in the cloud. Tablets, mobile phones and many computers use the cloud to help users access their applications. Shane Robison, newly appointed CEO of Fusion-io, sees the importance of providing a more stable cloud network.

Servers and storage devices that have spinning disks can’t keep up with the amount of data being generated globally. Fusion-io’s high capacity ioMemory is transforming large data centers, enabling the growth of the cloud and, along with it, social media giants and Fortune 500 businesses.

But when it comes to taking the reins, Robison isn’t just a leader.

“This isn’t about me, it’s about the company. I want to help everybody manage their positions on the team in a leading-edge technology company. It’s about creating exciting spaces,” he says.

Robison comes to Fusion-io with more than 30 years of technology experience. He was chief strategy and technology officer for Hewlett-Packard, leaving that position in November 2011. Before that, he served as chief technology officer for Compaq. Robison holds a B.S. and M.S. in computer science from the University of Utah, where his blood bleeds red for his team to this day.

And with seven years spent at Apple, he knows what needs to be done to make a tech company successful.

“Everybody has challenges … or opportunities. Fusion-io has a great opportunity to become a leader. We want to become a flash data center that is the architecture of choice,” he says.

Fusion-io has experienced tremendous success, and Robison intends to keep it moving forward. He was in semi-retirement before he took the CEO position with the company. When asked about what motivates him and drives his passion for the tech industry, he responds with a story about a mentor.

“He told me to do something really new every five years at minimum. Being honest and transparent is important. Be a problem solver.”

But there is one thing Robison knows is certain: Technology is ever changing. There is never a certainty when it comes to computers, the internet and cloud storage. He doesn’t plan on stopping and becoming complacent.

“You need goals,” he says. “Goals help you regain momentum; they help you figure out where you are, how you got there and what you need to do to get where you want to be.”

And while Robison isn’t opposed to the idea of retirement after Fusion-io, he is focused on the path at hand and ready to take Fusion-io to the next level.
