Gov. Gary R. Herbert selected TODD KISER as commissioner of the Utah Insurance Department. Kiser is currently finishing his final term as a legislator and working as president of Kiser-Lord Insurance Agency. Herbert also appointed ROBERT PERO to serve on the Utah State Tax Commission. Pero will resign his current post as Carbon County Clerk/Auditor upon his confirmation by the Utah State Senate. THAD LEVAR and DAVID R. CLARK were appointed to fill the two vacancies at the Utah Public Service Commission. LeVar has been with the Utah Department of Commerce since 2004, and is currently the agency’s Deputy Director. Clark has been serving as legal counsel to the Commission since 2010. A former U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General Corps attorney, Clark also previously served as president and co-founder of Enhanced Benefits Insurance Group, following employment with Sempra Energy and Pacific Bell.
MJ MILLER is the new director of development at Shriners Hospitals for Children—Salt Lake City. She joined the staff of the non-profit pediatric specialty hospital after serving eight years as director of external relations for the University of Nevada Las Vegas Libraries. She worked previously for Johns Hopkins University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
ASHLEY PATTERSON was hired as the new executive director of Wasatch Community Gardens. The Salt Lake City non-profit empowers people of all ages and incomes to grow and eat healthy, organic, local food. Patterson is the former Outreach and Education coordinator in the Office of Sustainability at the University of Utah and the founder and president of The Green Building Center.

The 2012 Rising Star Award is presented to a candidate who has been in the Architecture/Engineering/Construction (A/E/C) industry for three years or less and has shown promising value to Utah’s A/E/C industry and to the Society of Marketing Professional Services (SMPS) during that time.
DEREK J. WILLIAMS, a shareholder at Snow, Christensen & Martineau, was appointed, by the Supreme Court of Utah, to a three-year term on the Utah State Bar’s Diversion Committee. The committee considers certain attorney misconduct referrals from the Utah State Bar’s Office of Professional Conduct and works with both sides toward resolution. Williams' practice of law is focused on most areas of civil litigation, but particularly medical malpractice defense, personal injury defense, and adoption law.
