Overstock.com Inc. (NASDAQ: OSTK), Utah-based online discount retailer, has been named as one of the Salt Lake Chamber’s first Clean Air Champions. The Clean Air Champions program is designed to help Utah businesses enhance their commitment to clean air and benefit their bottom lines.
Overstock.com President Jonathan Johnson serves as the chair of the Chamber’s Clean Air Task Force. He said, “Cleaner air improves our quality of life. Though many local businesses have done much to improve air quality, we can do more. This program provides motivation, recognition and it helps businesses see what actions other businesses have found to be most effective.”
Overstock.com is one of the first 16 organizations to be included on the Clean Air Champions list. The others include Rio Tinto, Hale Centre Theatre, UPS, Salt Lake City, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Ray Quinney & Nebeker, Economic Development Corporation of Utah, Utah Department of Environmental Quality, Questar, Intermountain Health Care, Federal Reserve Bank, Salt Lake Chamber, Penna Powers Brian Haynes, ARES and USANA.
Businesses and organizations can become Clear Air Champions by enrolling in the program at www.cleanairchampion.com and indicating practices already in place or by implementing new Clean Air programs.
Suggested Clean Air best practices include utilizing teleworking options for employees and corporate meetings; operating or converting to a clean air fleet consisting of either natural gas, electric, hybrid, alternative fuels or cleaner burning gasoline vehicles; offering/subsidizing transit passes for employees; operating a carpool/vanpool program for employees; encouraging employees to use alternative modes of transportation on Red Air days; encouraging employees to use active transportation such as walking and biking; establishing a TravelWise integration plan; and participating annually in the Clear the Air Challenge.
Overstock.com offers bus pass and Frontrunner pass incentives to employees, and incentives to carpool.
Overstock.com was recently awarded the “For People and Planet” recognition by the Carbonfund.org Foundation. The company was given this award because of its carbon-neutral shipping partnership with Carbonfund.org for its Worldstock Fair Trade initiative. Every purchase made from Worldstock Fair Trade inventory ships carbon neutral at no extra cost to its customers.
