Local Providers Offer Ultra-high Speed Broadband Service on UTOPIA

Heather Stewart

July 6, 2012

Local internet service providers XMission and Veracity Networks are the only providers offering 1-gigabit-per-second service through the UTOPIA fiber-optic network. The service is about 200 times faster than the typical broadband connection.

The 1-gigabit service, which is priced at $299 per month, is not for everyone. Customers who are simply using the internet to browse content or stream movies don’t need the ultra-fast connection, said Pete Ashdown, founder and president of XMission.

“It’s really mainly geared to technical people, people who are working with a lot of data,” said Ashdown. For example, researchers, video and photo editors, and those who do a lot of web conferencing would benefit from the expanded data-transfer capabilities.

Additionally, the service is currently available for residential customers only, although Ashdown said his company is working with UTOPIA to eventually roll it out to commercial clients.

“There is much more of a residential reach on UTOPIA now than a commercial reach,” he explained.

According to Ashdown, only a handful of communities in the country have access to gigabit residential service. “It’s very exciting to see this kind of speed come to Utah,” he said. “The demand for bandwidth only goes up—it never goes back down.”

Founded in 1993, XMission provides Internet connectivity and digital phone service to residential and business clients, as well as sophisticated web hosting, cloud and colocation services to businesses.

Ashdown said XMission was able to partner with UTOPIA on the new residential service due to its reliability and established infrastructure. “[UTOPIA] didn’t want to hand it to just any provider,” he said.

Veracity Networks is based in Utah County but recently expanded into the Salt Lake area. The company offers internet, voice and network services to residential and business customers.

The 1-gigabit-per-second service is only available in the areas served by UTOPIA, including Murray, Midvale, West Valley City, Orem, Lindon, Payson, Perry, Brigham City, Tremonton, Centerville and Layton.
