Finding Tranquility at Utah’s Top Spas

Sarah Cutler

September 1, 2012

Utah’s diverse landscape and seasons promote the relaxation of its inhabitants—and the state has no shortage of high-end luxury spas that are close enough to go for an hour, a day or a full-blown vacation. Here is a sneak peek of four of Utah’s top spa retreats, each unique and each dedicated to your relaxation and comfort.

Golden Door Spa at Waldorf Astoria Park City
This sumptuous spa features a two-floor waterfall, the scent of bamboo piped through the HVC, a living green wall, tea and fireside lounges, a full-service hair and nail salon, and a custom-designed fitness center.

“Our mission is to raise the bar,” says Scott Cowdrey, Golden Door Spa director. “Our building is modeled after the honjin inns of Japan. When we opened in 2009, I had resumes from all over the world. We really pride ourselves with fantastic therapists.”

Popular Treatments:
Lavender Zen, at 80-minutes, is a two-step, full-body scrub exfoliation followed by a full-body massage with birch oil. You leave with the soothing and balancing benefits of birch, lavender and eucalyptus.

The Bindi Body Rejuvenation option checks in with all of the meridian points in the body. “Bindi” means the primordial point where everything begins and ends. The treatment begins with a warm herb exfoliation and a vigorous massage using a Dosha oil tailored to your needs. It ends with a scalp and foot massage while you’re wrapped in a warm blanket like a cocoon.

The Thai massage is a series of facilitated stretches combined with acupressure and yoga positions. It is done by the pool on a Thai matt using the therapist’s body weight and your body weight to stretch. According to Cowdrey, the therapists received training direct from Shanghai, Thailand.

The Aman Spa at Amangiri
“Amangiri” translates to “peaceful mountain.” How’s that for a great start? The Southern Utah resort is built around 165-million-year-old rocks and provides views of the Grand Staircase – Escalante National Monument. The spa menu was created to reflect elements of Navajo culture and healing traditions.

Popular Treatments:
Desert Dream is a 135-minute session priced at $375. Described as a journey of expanding consciousness, it starts with a combination of cranial sacral massage and flotation therapy. The sensation of floating in an environment where the water and air temperature match that of the body is preparation for a higher-level of meditation as you float untouched for another 30 minutes. An aromatherapy massage ends the experience.

Personalized massages for 60 or 90 minutes run from $160 to $240 and include a wide range of deep tissue, aromatherapy, Swedish and sports massages.

The Heaven & Earth treatment is 90 minutes, priced at $250. It begins with exfoliation of the hands and feet, which are then massaged and placed in warm wraps, followed by a full-body wrap with a neck, shoulder and scalp massage. A mini-facial completes the session.

Spa Montage at Deer Valley
Staying true to its claim of wisdom in holistic healing, Spa Montage takes to Utah’s mountain terrain to bring you nature’s vast healing elements, like the resin of aspen bark, flowering plants that provide propolis, milk thistle and other indigenous herbs.

“We are really trying to harness the power of our mountain location. We are actually using the wisdom of the land that we are on,” says Spa Director Kristi Dickinson. “It’s a large spa with 29 treatment rooms. We also have a specialty suite—the Serenity Suite—that can be used for special occasions.”

Popular Treatments:
Après Ease, designed to remove lactic acid after skiing or other activities, uses a nutrient-rich healing mud to ease physical discomfort. This is followed by point-specific massage to revitalize stressed muscles and regain flexibility. Après Ease is a 60-minute treatment priced at $185.

Lithely Limbs combines vigorous, fortifying skin brushing with a temperature contrast foot bath to encourage release of lactic acids. After the detoxifying prelude is a massage to relieve tight muscles, specifically in the back, hips and lower limbs. It is priced at $185 for 60 minutes or $230 for 90.

Peace of Mind: Surrender is an exclusive approach to relaxation that puts your needs in the hands of the spa therapist. A treatment is tailored for you after a discussion of lifestyle and needs. This treatment ranges from 120 minutes to an all-day experience and starts at $395.
