Big crowds are headed to the opening of downtown’s new City Creek Center today.
Five years after demolition began, the 23-acre retail, office and housing project is open. Buzz for the development has been building for months, with sneak peeks of stores like Nordstrom and Tiffany & Co. bringing in guests before the grand opening. A few curious people wandered around the stores Wednesday morning, beating today’s crowds.
Many stores plan to offer gifts and coupons today to the first customers through the door.
Of the 90 stores in the Center, one-third are new to Utah. Tiffany & Co. is making its Utah debut and Sales Manager Angela Maldonado said she was happy to be in the state.
“We’re so excited to be here in Salt Lake. We’ve wanted to be here for a long time,” she said. “We’ve felt this exciting spirit from the community.”
Having City Creek Center open in downtown will give visitors to Salt Lake City more options and complement what’s already available, said Scott Beck, president & CEO of Visit Salt Lake.
"Truly, with the opening of City Creek, you'd be hard-pressed to find another American city with such a vibrant downtown full of activities and things to do, and its very own canyon."
City Creek created 1,700 construction jobs and is expected to create 2,000 permanent jobs.
